How to design that special and cool birthday cake for that special person

by Sarah Blyth

In the past, birthday cakes for children were baked by their mothers who usually did not work outside the home. In today's world, home made cakes are becoming a thing of the past and parents opt for a cake purchased from a grocery store or a speciality bake shop.

These cakes are personalized, and often display very skillful "artwork" and designs and decorations. The trend nowadays is cool birthday cakes for children.

The planning starts well before the child's birthday, making a mental note of what would give the child total happiness looking at the cake that would be baked for that special day.

It could be a depiction of a popular animated character, such as a Walt Disney character, or something simpler representing what the child likes such as a garden, a doll, a ball, a fairy tale title. Ultimately the list is endless.

Interests of boys and girls vary. The goal is to excite the child. Observation is not the only way for identifying what the child would like.

Parents and siblings could spend time talking to the child and listening to what the child is interested in. Obviously, a surprise cake makes the occasion more special than letting the child know what is being ordered.

Children have very fertile imaginations and they want many things. They also do not have steady desires. Some of the things that might please them are hard to depict on a cake.

As a result it is best to look for a professional cake designer who is capable of designing and baking such a cake.

Online research can be done in order to find a professional cake baker/decorator to take care of creating your child's cake. Photos of cake creations should be present on the website, along with other information such as location, delivery fees if applicable, and overall costs.

Once you choose, it is important to discuss with him/her the main ingredients, the right colours, the right flavours, and the finishing touches to the theme one has in mind. It is love ultimately that goes into the effort, making the final product a gift for the child on his/her special day.
